Pedometer Partners

Abilene Right Weigh Project has created a Pedometer Partners program, similar to the adopt a school program, to match schools and local businesses to create walking wellness programs for all of our children. Schools wanting to adopt a walking wellness program need $1,200 to $1,500 for equipment and supplies, including pedometer kits for each classroom. Middle schools need additional funding since they have nearly twice the number of students.

Several campuses in Abilene already have adopted a walking program as recommended by walking and wellness authority Robert Sweetgall. Pedometers are used to measure steps taken and miles walked. Pedometers also are integrated in math since and geography lessons. Expected outcomes include improved attendance, reduced discipline problems, higher test scores and, by the end of the year, a decrease in average BMI.
